ISIS-CSP: Screening, Follow-up, Statistics

Screening • Follow-up • Statistics

The Complete Information Management Solution
for Population Based Cervical Cancer
Screening and Prevention Programs

ISIS-CSP - The Information System for Cervical Cancer Screening
and Prevention.

Public health organizations concerned with the control or prevention of cervical cancer can now acquire a comprehensive computerized system for managing their population-based programs.

ISIS-CSP handles virtually every business function including:

  • invitation & recruitment,
  • data gathering and consolidation,
  • follow-up & recall tracking,
  • client/provider reminders,
  • epidemiological analysis, and
  • program evaluation.

It scales readily from local to regional to state/province and even countrywide implementations. It includes strong security and privacy measures that make the system compliant with today's regulations.

A Legacy of Performance and Reliability

ISIS-CSP first went into production in 1996 in Ontario, Canada to support the provincial cervical cancer screening initiative. Today it tracks the status of over 3.5 million women, automatically registers over 6,000 test results daily, generates monthly follow-up reminders for over 12,000 physicians and produces annual epidemiological statistics. In 2001, ISIS-CSP was also implemented in Manitoba, Canada in support of the province's cervical cancer screening program, managing a population of over 500,000 women.

From its initial design in 1995, ISIS-CSP has undergone several revisions and upgrades and is firmly on a path to ensure it continuously leverages emerging technology while mitigating undue risk for our clients.

Robust & Extensible

We recognize that not all cervical screening programs operate the same way. Business rules, policies and protocols vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. That's why ISIS-CSP was designed with functional extensibility in mind. ISIS-CSP is comprised of several customizable modules: the ISIS-CEI (central entity index), the cytology CDR (clinical data repository) and a data management layer which houses customized business and data processing rules. The core system can be enhanced with the addition of the ISIS histopathology CDR and/or the colposcopy CDR. ISIS-CSP can also be integrated with centralized cancer registries or other cancer screening programs.

Open Standards Compliant

ISIS-CSP is designed for the Oracle RDBMS platform and supports open system standards including: ANSI SQL, ANSI HL7, and TCP/IP. The system can be maintained and operated by any qualified IT personnel. AIM Inc. can also provide source code and complete technical documentation to those clients who wish to administer and revise the system autonomously.

Efficient and Accurate Data Gathering

One of the hallmarks of the ISIS-CSP system is its capability to gather data electronically from hospitals and laboratories that perform screening, diagnostic and treatment services. Using AIM's TransMed EAI software, it's easy to integrate ISIS-CSP with virtually any ancillary system in the screening community. This means that screening results, the follow-up diagnoses and treatment outcomes are gathered accurately and quickly with virtually no human intervention. The data is automatically consolidated into the database, follow-up and recall status on each and every woman is adjusted appropriately, and operators are alerted to any deficiencies in data quality.

Follow-up & Recall Management

ISIS-CSP functions both as a proactive follow-up and recall reminder system and as a passive database for tracking screening trends. In passive mode it provides valuable retrospective data for program planning and policy development. In the proactive mode, ISIS-CSP automatically updates each and every woman's screening status using business rules that take into account the individual's screening history, demographic, and clinical information. Status updates are triggered on any change to an individual's record, such as the receipt of new results, changes in residency status, and so on. In proactive mode, ISIS-CSP automatically generates reminder notices for healthcare providers (or individuals) indicating overdue screening tests, follow-up of abnormalities or treatment.

Standard Reporting Dictionaries (e.g. Bethesda)

User-configurable reference dictionaries drive much of the business logic in ISIS-CSP. These dictionaries ensure that the data in ISIS-CSP is consistently of high quality and reliability. While virtually any nomenclature can be accommodated, ISIS-CSP was designed for use with the Bethesda system of cervical cytology reporting. The unique way in which Bethesda is incorporated makes ISIS-CSP exceptionally flexible in accommodating evolving practice while maintaining the accuracy of historical results.

Exceptional Security and Audit

ISIS-CSP incorporates strong security measures compliant with today's healthcare regulations. Electronic transmission of data is protected using a public key infrastructure (PKI), which can be self-managed or use third party certificates. User applications employ encrypted passwords and role-based access to functions and data. Security is augmented with a comprehensive audit system that records all activities and data updates. The audit system also tracks all activities and updates regarding any particular individual's medical records.
